Another day at the sanctuary

THE IGUANA LIVES.....AND IS QUITE PISSED THAT A DOG BIT HIM IN THE HEAD!

The spiny iguana that I brought in the other other day pulled through the night.  I was going to re-clean his head wounds but he had other plans.  As soon as I got him out of his temporary hospital cage, he started thrashing around....let me tell you how accurately they are named.  He also had some pretty good nails on him too.  I had decided that medicine wasn't going to happen, which he agreed upon, and was a going to get him a little closer to a tree before I let go when he decided to latch onto one of my fingers.  This is how the animal kingdom repays those that pull them out of dog's mouths.  Unfortunately my reaction was to fling him into the air....he hit the ground, shook his head and took off running to the nearest tree.  I think he is going to make it....so will my finger (just a new battle scar).
The (sulking) patient in his temporary cage.

He made it to a tree

He is trying to pretend nothing happened....but we all know the truth.
KATIE AND SARAH'S LAST DAY AT THE SANCTUARY:

Katie and Sarah were the volunteers from Louisiana.
For their last day, we all went up to the rainsong waterfalls.  Before we could head up though, we needed to help Alejandro finish the rabbit cage divider up on the hill so that we could move the other female up there.
Alejandro is very proud of his divider....he should be, he did a great job

The first female moved over to her new house.

Both girls are happy to have more space....they still need a bit of
homey touches but that'll come later.

Once the rabbits were set up and we were satisfied that a boa wasn't going to get in, we headed to the waterfalls. On the hike up to the falls, we walked up the river.....unfortunately, we came across a deer that had been killed by poachers on the sanctuary land.  I won't include pictures...just mentioning it.  The property is so large that the guys can't hear everything even though they live there.  Apparently, poaching is a big problem here in Costa Rica.

The group below me in the pool.

This is actually a concrete box and cement that has been put in above the falls that diverts water from the river.  These are illegal but people do it anyway.  Mary used to break them up with a sledge hammer but people always rebuild them.  I might go up there with a sledge hammer next time I go.  The waterfall would be way cooler with more water.

Alejandro in his classic pose under the waterfall....and everybody else
just watching him.
I love the view from the sanctuary as we headed back down the hill.
You can see Isla Cabuya in the distance.

Road block in Costa Rica....this is why the power goes out
a lot....and the internet.

Two long tailed Manakins....very cool sounding birds

LATER AT THE SANCTUARY:

I decided to start organizing some of the young plants around the sanctuary.  Mary is part of the reforestation project.  Everything on the property was planted by her during the last 18 years.  She has many different kinds of trees growing in little pots all over the place so that she can give them to people to plant on their property.
This is the beginning of the organization project....after pictures are to come.

Then Edwin showed up and we goofed around.....burning trash and saying hello to cows.
Edwin....such a cutie

having fun with the camera

Edwin and his new novia...yes, it is a bull...but he was so sweet!

Unlike this guy.....this is the #@*&%(# that chased me the other
morning in the sanctuary while I held his horns so he wouldn't get me.
You would have run away too.

They aren't very bright.....They walked right up to the burn pile
and stuck their noses in.  Geesh.

a very large iguana in the trees.....heads up.  I have watched them fall
out....you don't want one of these guys landing on your head.
