Hello Everybody,
I am alive! It turns out that I don't have wifi at the rainsong sactuary. I have to walk into town to get wifi at one of the few restaurants. Since my last post I have traveled from Alajuela to Cabuya. I left my hotel around 8:20 am and got to Cabuya around 3. The roads here are quite windy and bumpy. I am amazed with the cyclists and motorcyclists here. They just swerve in and out of traffic and cars don't move over for them.
I met several Americans on the way to Cabuya....we had several hours to chat in our shuttle. Two were recent graduates from a high school in California and another young woman taking a break before heading to graduate school in New York. We had to switch vans when we got to the ferry. It rained on the ferry trip but I did get some good pics. I will post the pics soon. We switched to another van when we got to Montezuma so the two teenagers could head to Mal Pais. I got dropped off on a dirt road,at a gate that looked like it didn't work on. We rang the bell and I got to meet Mary for the first time. We walked in and unloaded my bags and it was like entering a who other world. Everything was shady and in bad need of organization and cleaning....I have my work cut out for me but I am so ready! The animals that are there: a toucan, parrot, some squirrels, a baby howler monkey, two baby opossums, guinea pigs, lots of turtles, a couple of dogs and a cat. Mary showed me my options for sleeping....a "cabin" on the sanctuary, and two covered platforms on the farm. I slept in the "cabin" but had to put up with the neighbors music and the sawdust from the termites in the cross beams of the roof. Mary and I stayed up talking for a bit and I was put in charge of the baby opossums...Mary is tired of feeding them every 4 hours. I love it! I walked into town and ate at a local soda (roadside restaurant) and walked back. When I got back, Mary had one of her other workers bring her a chocolate cake.....she shared it with me. Yum! Then it was off to bed. I hung up my hammock and read for a bit. The night sounds were different but also the same as camping in Texas. I was woken up around 5:00 this morning by a troop of howler monkeys....very interesting sound, especially if you don't recognize it at first. I got up at 6:30, had some coffee, fed my new babies and sat around with Mary until the other volunteers arrived....Kristen from Chicago, Rebecca and Brenda from New York, and Rachel from Louisiana. We took Charlie, the baby howler monkey, out for playtime in the trees. After playtime, we all went to lunch because it is Rachel's last day. It is an interesting group....I will tell you that.
